FLC’s Youth Development Chair Subj: Sea Scouts’ Racing Pram

The following item was received from Admiral John Paddock too late to be included in the March issue of Brightwork: “You may recall that at the 2008 FLC Boat Show in Skaneateles, Sea Scouts Ship 23 began the build of a small racing pram under the guidance and direction of Captain Jim Shotwell of Nescopeck, PA.

Completion of that pram is the major project on the spring agenda of SSS 23’s activities, and the goal is to launch the finished boat at the Chapter’s July 24-26, 2009 Boat Show in Skaneateles.

“The biggest challenge facing SSS 23 is obtaining an appropriate propulsion package for the pram. Jim recommends that we find a 10HP outboard motor, perhaps Johnson or Evinrude, together with the universal steering / shift / throttle control to install in the completed boat. “We have the donation of a steering / shift / throttle system lined up, but we’re still looking for a donated, or at least an inexpensive, 10 HP outboard motor and fuel tank which meets this need.

If you could get the word out to your membership regarding SSS 23's request, it would be greatly appreciated. Alternatively we could shop E-bay, so monetary donations could help in procuring a motor and tank, too.” If anyone has an outboard motor, fuel tank or funds they would like to donate for the above project, please get in touch with me at arniebbd@aol.com or at 315-637-8522.

The Sea Scouts are an arm of the Boy Scouts of America, and Sea Scouts Ship 23 is part of the Hiawatha Seaway Council, BSA (headquartered in Syracuse) which is a 501(c)3 organization. Thanks. Arnie Rubenstein, Director Finger Lakes Chapter, ACBS
